The explorer therefore shows the pool, denominator, counting rule, and measurement date beside every result instead of presenting one ranking as permanent truth.

The five-position heatmap always measures the exact slot, because one character occupies only one slot. The word inspector then combines those descriptive values for a proposed five-letter word without replacing the site's separate starting-word ranker or solver.
How the Wordle letter frequency calculation works

The answer view starts with exactly 2,000 curated local Core words, and the guess view starts with 9,983 deduplicated accepted entries. Every word has five characters. That creates 10,000 answer slots or 49,915 accepted-guess slots before any letter is counted. Changing the pool recomputes ranks, percentages, repeated-word totals, coverage, and the selected word profile from that chosen denominator.
Wordle letter frequency: Presence first turns each word into a set of distinct letters. APPLE therefore adds one presence to A, P, L, and E even though P appears twice. Occurrence counting reads all five characters and adds both copies of P. Neither method is universally superior. Presence is easier to interpret as the chance that a random word from the modeled pool contains a letter; occurrences describe how much of the complete five-slot corpus that character occupies.

These are original measurements from the published local arrays, not claims about a private New York Times schedule.
