Measure the structure of a possible Wordle answer

The score is an empirical percentile against 2,000 local Core answers. It describes spelling and feedback structure, not a prediction of your personal score.

The entered words and results stay in this browser. No answer, guess, or comparison is uploaded.

Independent structural model: 2,000 local Core answers, 1,000 Expert answers, 9,983 accepted guesses, six fixed benchmark openers, and duplicate-aware feedback. Not official Wordle or WordleBot data.

Wordle difficulty calculator: This tool gives any accepted five-letter word a 0–100 structural difficulty score. The score is calibrated as a percentile against this site's 2,000 Core answers: a result of 80 means the word's measured spelling and feedback structure is harder than roughly 80% of that local comparison pool. It does not claim that 80% of players will fail or that a particular person will need a fixed number of guesses.

Wordle difficulty calculator: The calculation combines four disclosed signals. One-letter neighbors measure late trap risk; benchmark-opener ambiguity measures how many Core candidates commonly survive a first row; positional rarity measures how unusual each letter is in its exact slot; repeated letters measure duplicate pressure. You can inspect every raw value, compare two words, and keep the conclusion attached to the model date and word pools.

How the Wordle difficulty score is calculated

Wordle difficulty calculator: The build first profiles all 9,983 accepted guesses, but the calibration population is the 2,000-word Core answer pool. For each word it counts Core answers at Hamming distance one, finds the largest group sharing four fixed positions, and measures exact-position letter rarity. It also scores the color pattern produced by CRANE, SLATE, TRACE, ARISE, AUDIO, and STARE against every Core answer. Larger matching feedback groups mean more first-row ambiguity.

Wordle difficulty calculator: Each raw factor becomes an empirical percentile inside the Core population. Neighbor risk contributes 25%, opener ambiguity 30%, positional rarity 20%, and repeated letters 25%. The weighted value is calibrated again against all Core weighted values, then rounded to an integer from 0 to 100. This second calibration makes the number readable as relative position, not as an invented probability of solving or losing.

What makes a five-letter target structurally difficult

Wordle difficulty calculator: Difficulty is not one property. A familiar word can be awkward because it belongs to a dense trap family, while a rare-looking word can become obvious after a strong first row. The calculator keeps four signals separate so one label never hides the reason.

  • Wordle difficulty calculator: One-letter neighbors count Core answers that differ in exactly one position. Families such as _ATCH can force a late choice even after four letters appear fixed.
  • Wordle difficulty calculator: Largest trap family reports the biggest four-position frame containing the entered spelling. It complements the total neighbor count by showing the worst single cluster.
  • Wordle difficulty calculator: Opener ambiguity uses the geometric mean of surviving Core candidates after six disclosed starters. A geometric mean limits the influence of one unusually large branch.
  • Wordle difficulty calculator: Position rarity averages the information value of each exact letter slot. It describes spelling structure and does not substitute for real-language familiarity.
  • Wordle difficulty calculator: Repeated copies equal five minus the number of distinct letters. Duplicate-aware feedback can reveal fewer copies than a player first assumes.

Research and concrete numbers behind the model

Wordle difficulty calculator: Liu, Zhang, and Zhang model Wordle difficulty with guessing-time distributions and report that significant lexical factors include neighboring words, letter similarity, substring similarity, and word frequency. This local calculator adopts the transparent structural factors it can reproduce from its published arrays. It deliberately does not estimate semantic familiarity or claim to recreate their Monte Carlo, Markov, regression, or player-distribution model.

  • Wordle difficulty calculator: 2,000 Core answers form the empirical calibration population in the August 18, 2026 build.
  • Wordle difficulty calculator: 9,983 accepted guesses receive a lookup row, including Core, Expert, and accepted-only spellings.
  • Wordle difficulty calculator: Six fixed openers—CRANE, SLATE, TRACE, ARISE, AUDIO, and STARE—measure first-row feedback ambiguity.
  • Wordle difficulty calculator: Four factor weights sum to 100%: neighbors 25%, opener ambiguity 30%, positional rarity 20%, and repeats 25%.
  • Wordle difficulty calculator: Five tile positions with three states yield 243 theoretical feedback codes before impossible patterns are removed.

A concise research definition of influential factors

Wordle difficulty calculator: The quotation identifies attributes associated with modeled word difficulty. The calculator uses only the locally reproducible structural subset and keeps that limitation visible.

How to interpret the score without overclaiming

Wordle difficulty calculator: A percentile is comparative. A score of 90 means that the weighted structure is above about 90% of Core answers in this build; it does not mean a 90% failure rate. Human results also depend on vocabulary, opener choice, luck, Hard Mode, clue reading, and the actual answer schedule. Accepted-only words are hypothetical targets and receive a structural comparison even though they are not Core answers.

Wordle difficulty calculator: Ties are expected because the display rounds to a whole number. Raw metrics remain visible when two words share a score. The strongest-factor label selects the largest weighted factor contribution, not a universal cause. Rebuilding the Core pool, changing benchmark openers, or altering weights can change the result, which is why the page shows a measurement date and model counts.

  1. Wordle difficulty calculator: Use the score for relative structure, not as a promise of average guesses.
  2. Wordle difficulty calculator: Inspect the largest family when a word belongs to a familiar one-letter trap.
  3. Wordle difficulty calculator: Check pool status before treating an accepted-only spelling as a likely answer.

Wordle difficulty calculator questions

Wordle difficulty calculator: Is this an official Wordle difficulty score?

No. It is an independent structural percentile calculated from this site's disclosed local pools and fixed factor weights. It is not official Wordle, The New York Times, or WordleBot data.

Wordle difficulty calculator: Does a score of 80 mean an 80% failure rate?

No. It means the word's weighted structural profile is above roughly 80% of the 2,000 Core answers. Player failure and guess distributions are not predicted.

Wordle difficulty calculator: Why can a familiar word receive a hard rating?

Familiarity is not scored. A common word can have many one-letter neighbors, a large trap family, repeated letters, or ambiguous feedback after the benchmark openers.

Wordle difficulty calculator: Can I test a word outside the Core answer pool?

Yes, if it belongs to the 9,983-word accepted guess bank. The result is labeled Expert or accepted-only and should be read as a hypothetical structural target.

Wordle difficulty calculator: Are entered words uploaded or saved?

No analysis request is sent. Static data loads once, lookup occurs in the browser, and optional query parameters preserve only the visible words for comparison and locale switching.

Use a transparent difficulty score as a question starter

Wordle difficulty calculator: The most useful result is not the colored tier by itself. Read which factor dominates, examine the raw family and ambiguity values, and compare a second word under the identical model. A surprising score should lead to inspection, not blind trust.
