Wordle Burner Word Strategy: When to Play a Probe Guess

A probe guess can look wasteful because it cannot be the answer. Used at the right moment, however, it can separate a whole word family before the six-row limit turns the puzzle into a lottery.

Wordle burner word: A burner is an accepted guess chosen for information, not an immediate solve. In Normal mode, use one when candidates share a frame and one probe can test several changing letters. Leave enough rows to use the result; otherwise the lost solve chance costs more than the information.

Wordle burner word: Do not probe by habit. Prefer a candidate when the set is small and varied, when it divides nearly as well, or when only one row remains. Hard Mode can make a burner illegal because revealed greens and yellows must be reused, so check active rules.

What a Wordle burner word actually does

Wordle burner word: A candidate is still capable of being the hidden answer. A probe is selected because the color patterns it can produce separate the remaining answers efficiently, even when the word itself is outside that answer set. Calling the probe a burner describes the trade: one row gives up its direct win chance in exchange for cleaner evidence on the following row.

Wordle burner word: The useful question is not whether the probe contains five unused letters. It is whether those letters map to the unresolved differences among the candidates. If the remaining words are BATCH, CATCH, HATCH, LATCH, MATCH, PATCH, and WATCH, testing unrelated vowels adds little. A carefully chosen probe should cover several of B, C, H, L, M, P, and W in legal positions.

List the candidates

Wordle burner word: Reconstruct every answer that fits all green, yellow, gray, position, and repeated-letter evidence. A probe chosen from an incomplete set can protect the wrong branch.

Find the changing slots

Wordle burner word: Mark the letters that distinguish the candidates. The best probe covers those decision letters instead of maximizing generic alphabet coverage.

Reserve the payoff row

Wordle burner word: Count the rows left after the probe. Information has value only when at least one later guess can convert it into the answer.

When a Wordle burner word earns its row

Wordle burner word: The clearest case is a large one-slot family. Seven answers can look close to seven opportunities, but guessing family members one at a time may consume every remaining row. A probe that tests four or five possible initials can reduce that sequence to one information move and one answer move. This is why candidate count alone is not enough; candidate shape and the number of guesses left determine the risk.

Wordle burner word: A probe also helps when a candidate list is broad but the worst feedback branch remains large for every candidate. Compare average survivors, not just the number of colored tiles. Then inspect the largest branch. A move with a slightly weaker average can be safer when it prevents one common pattern from leaving too many answers for the available rows.

When a Wordle burner word wastes the solve chance

Wordle burner word: Do not burn a row merely because an unusual valid word contains fresh letters. With three diverse candidates and three guesses remaining, playing a candidate may solve immediately while still splitting the others through its feedback. If that candidate has nearly the same average and worst branch as the best probe, its nonzero solve chance breaks the tie.

Wordle burner word: Late probes are especially dangerous. A perfect split on row six has no payoff because the puzzle ends immediately. A row-five probe is useful only when it identifies one answer with certainty for row six. Also avoid a fixed favorite probe: feedback changes which letters matter, so a memorized word can test the wrong part of today’s candidate set.

Candidate or burner: a practical decision table

Wordle burner word: Use the board state, mode, and rows remaining together. A probe is justified by the future branch it creates, not by how clever the word looks.

What research and the local model say about probes

Wordle burner word: Bertsimas and Paskov model Wordle as a finite-state decision problem. Their documented instance uses 2,315 possible solutions and 12,972 allowable guesses, and their reported optimal Normal-mode policy starts with SALET and averages 3.421 guesses. The important lesson is that the best action depends on the exact state, not on a universal list of clever words.

Wordle burner word: The Dont Wordle tools use a separate, reproducible local snapshot measured August 6, 2026: 2,000 Core answer candidates and 9,983 accepted guesses. The Second Word Finder compares average survivors, worst branch, entropy, pattern count, candidate status, and Hard-Mode legality. It is independent of WordleBot and does not claim the current official answer list.

  • Wordle burner word: Five tiles with three feedback states produce at most 243 raw color patterns before impossible patterns are removed.
  • Wordle burner word: The MIT-hosted paper evaluates 2,315 possible solutions and 12,972 allowable guesses in its documented model.
  • Wordle burner word: Its optimal Normal-mode policy reports a 3.421-guess average when beginning with SALET under those assumptions.

Why the same burner is not right for every board

Wordle burner word: The MIT-hosted paper states the state-dependent rule directly:

“the next guess is derived from a consideration of all possible actions and the information that each of these tells.”

Wordle burner word: In practical terms, inspect every legal action after the exact colors you received. A famous probe has no special value when its letters do not divide today’s remaining answers.

A thirty-second burner-word checklist

Wordle burner word: Run these checks before sacrificing a live solve chance for information.

  1. Wordle burner word: Rebuild the candidate set with duplicate-aware green, yellow, gray, and position constraints.
  2. Wordle burner word: Highlight the exact letters and slots that differ among the remaining answers.
  3. Wordle burner word: Count rows left after the proposed probe and reserve at least one row for its payoff.
  4. Wordle burner word: Compare candidate and probe average survivors, then protect against the largest branch.
  5. Wordle burner word: Prefer a candidate when it splits nearly as well because it can also solve immediately.
  6. Wordle burner word: Confirm the probe is accepted and legal under the active Normal or Hard Mode rules.

Wordle burner word FAQ

Wordle burner word: Is a burner word cheating in Wordle?

Wordle burner word: No in Normal mode if the game accepts the word. It is a deliberate information guess. Hard Mode can reject it when it fails to reuse revealed clues.

Wordle burner word: Should a burner use five completely new letters?

Wordle burner word: Not automatically. It should test the unresolved letters that separate the candidate set. Reusing a known letter can be correct when it makes the probe legal or positions other tests well.

Wordle burner word: When is it too late to play a burner?

Wordle burner word: It is too late when no later row can use the information. On row five, the probe should normally identify one certain row-six answer; on row six, it cannot pay back.

Spend a row only when the information pays back

Wordle burner word: A probe is strongest when candidates share a rigid frame, several changing letters can be tested together, and enough guesses remain to convert the result. The best move is not the word with the most unusual letters; it is the word that divides the actual candidate family into manageable branches.
